21. La Escobilla
The turtle sanctuary at Playa Escobilla is approximately35 km west of Puerto Escondido. It is located on a 23 km beach, of which 15 km are protected. At the time of the creation of the sanctuary in 2002, it was estimated there were approximately 20,000 turtles actively coming to the beach. Due to poaching of the eggs and killing of the turtles, those numbers were rapidly diminishing. Since that time, thanks to the proactive protection given by members of the local community through the sanctuary, it is now estimated that there are over 1 million turtles making this beach their home.
Members of the sanctuary collect turtle eggs from the nests each night. They are placed in the sanctuary, and upon hatching the baby turtles are released into the ocean. Virtually every evening people can come to the beach (cost is 100 pesos) where a guide will explain the sanctuary and allow the visitors to release the newborn babies. The babies are often just a couple of hours old when, after being released, they make their way down the beach and into the ocean.
