Since the HOA took over the management of Viewpoint from the developers in 2013, the owners have contributed generously to the betterment of the community they have adopted as their winter home.
Initially, the contributions benefitted the complex as well as the community. HOA property taxes paid for the municipal water line to be brought up to the complex and several local families were able to tap into it. A similar arrangement also subsidized the construction of the road leading up to the gate. The original road was a goat trail and it was widened and paved in sections over three seasons.
Over time, volunteer fund-raising efforts have helped to improve conditions at 15 different rural schools in the Puerto Angel area. Since 2014, hundreds of thousands of pesos have been donated to fund projects such as the building of classrooms, covered play or lunch areas, and toilet blocks, the installation of water tanks, and the provision of furniture and educational materials.
Owners have also donated equipment to local surf lifesaver clubs and to animal welfare organizations, such as Dogs of Puerto Angel, which hold sterilization and treatment clinics for dogs and cats.
When the Pochutla Hospital was designated as a regional receiving centre for Covid patients in 2020, Viewpoint residents stepped up to the plate and donated over $5000 in a matter of days to help with the purchase of PPE and other supplies. The Pochutla Rotary Club had applied to the Rotary Foundation for assistance with the purchase of equipment and had to substantiate community support for their application. Our donation was sufficient to validate their request and the Club was granted $US35,000 which was a windfall for the local hospital.
Perhaps Viewpoint’s most recognizable contribution to the community was the donation of a firetruck and an emergency support vehicle to the Pochutla Bomberos. The vehicles were obtained through a partnership with Firefighters Without Borders. Owners donated over $11,000 to cover the costs of transporting the vehicles from British Columbia to Pochutla. Efforts are currently ongoing to assist with the construction of a new firehall and the acquisition of a rescue vehicle. Stay tuned!
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
School Projects
As an example of our rural school improvement projects, this corrugated tin classroom at La Mina was demolished and a proper structure with concrete floor, door and windows, electricity and weather-proof walls and roof was erected by the parents with funding by VP owners and friends.

Fire Truck Project
In 2017, the Pochutla fire chief came to the VP gate to ask for a donation for the purchase of a new hose for the antiquated tanker truck which served the entire Pochutla Municipality. This was the start of a quest by VP owners and friends to secure better equipment for the first responders who service our area. After months of determined effort working with Firefighters Without Borders and the Rotary Club of Pochutla, in October 2018, a fire engine from Castlegar and a Ford Ranger support vehicle from Richmond, BC, were being driven from Canada to Pochutla! The project was hugely challenging with twists and turns we had not anticipated, but equally rewarding in the end.
